Why put sweet potato in a smoothie?
Sweet potatoes are high in fibre and nutrients and taste wonderful when blended with bananas, spices, and other ingredients. It has a lot of flavour, natural sweetness, and helps you feel fuller for longer when sweet potato is combined with banana and spices in a smoothie like this one.

When blended, it has a smooth, velvet mouthfeel. It thickens as well and is naturally sweetened. It gives your smoothie a pudding-like texture while also imparting a pie-like flavour!
It’s also a wonderful smoothie ingredient if you don’t possess a high-powered blender. It blends smoothly, just like a banana does when cooked so if you don’t feel confident your blender could handle it raw, try this option.
What you’ll need to make a Sweet Potato Pie Smoothie

- Medium banana
- Almond milk
- Greek yogurt
- Almond butter
- Vanilla extract
- Ground cinnamon
- Nutmeg

Ingredient substitutions
Sweet potato: If you don’t have sweet potatoes on hand, use mashed sweet potatoes (canned or fresh). The recipe instructs you to use 2 cups cubed, which I believe equals 1 1/2 cups mashed. You may add more or less to suit your preferences.
Nut butter: I used almond butter, but I’ve also tried it with cashew butter and think both are wonderful. To keep this smoothie nut-free, use sunflower butter instead of almond butter. It will have a different flavour because of the substitution, but it will still be extremely rich!
Coconut milk: Replace the unsweetened almond milk with full-fat coconut milk to make it even creamier and add extra nutrients. Use it in place of almond milk instead. Or try any plant-based milk that you enjoy in your smoothie recipes.
What you could also add
Oats: To make a thicker smoothie, add 1/3 cup of oats. Steel-cut oats will not combine properly because they aren’t ground.
Flax seed meal: this is one of my favourite smoothie ingredients for a little boost of fibre and minerals, as well as nursing moms because flaxseed can help with milk production. A spoonful is usually enough!
Hemp seeds: if you’ve been wondering what to do with those hemp seeds lurking in your cupboard, feel free to throw in a tablespoon into your smoothie for a boost of healthy fats, omegas, and minerals.
Maca: Maca is an intriguing ingredient that may help balance your hormones. It has a nice caramel flavour and can be used to improve things like your energy levels!
Spinach: If you want to add more greens to your smoothie, try adding a cup or two of raw or cooked spinach. You’ll never be able to tell, but if you use orange juice instead of lemon juice, the colour of your smoothie may change to brown.
Protein: Add 1 scoop of your favourite protein powder to a smoothie for an extra boost of protein. Vanilla protein powder will work well but you might want to reduce the vanilla essence a little if you use this.
Frozen cauliflower: Add a cup of frozen cauliflower to thicken your smoothie even more and add extra vegetables. You won’t even be able to tell it’s there!
How to make the smoothie
Place all the ingredients into a high-speed blender and blend until smooth. Serve straight away.

Recipe tips
If you want to create a make-ahead smoothie with the recipe, it is best to cook and freeze the sweet potato to stop it from discolouring.
Sweet potato cubes should be baked for 20-30 minutes at 375 degrees F, flipping them halfway through. Sweet potatoes are done when they are fork-tender. Allow the sweet potatoes to cool completely before storing them in a reusable bag or an airtight freezer-safe container for up to three months.
You can also freeze the banana then add the frozen banana and sweet potato with the fresh ones to the blender and add the spices when you are ready to make the smoothie.
