Refreshing Berry Beet Smoothie
There’s no right or wrong time for a smoothie – filled with goodness that we often miss from other meals, it is a tasty and simple nutrient boost. Sometimes, smoothies tend to use the classics like berries but also there are options to include less common ingredients, ones we might not want to eat. An example of that is this refreshing Berry Beet Smoothie.

Beet in a smoothie?
I bet I know what you are thinking – beet in a smoothie? Beetroot, as we called it in the UK, is more commonly associated with things like pickling or maybe in a soup or salad. Personally, I couldn’t eat the stuff if I tried but adding it with other ingredients into a smoothie? That’s a lot more manageable.

And there are some solid reasons for doing it. For starters, beets are low in calories but high in nutrients – they contain 20% of the recommended daily dose of folate and 16% of manganese for instance. They also contain stuff like potassium, iron, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin C, all of which the body needs.
Beets are good to help keep blood pressure in check and also to fight inflammation. They contain something called betalains which have anti-inflammatory properties and also have dietary fibre in which helps with digestion. There are even studies showing it could help with brain health, increasing blood flow to the frontal lobe where we do our higher thinking.
What you need to make the Berry Beet Smoothie
- 2 large bananas, cut into chunks and frozen
- 1 c. frozen strawberries
- 1 c. frozen raspberries
- 2 large red beets, roasted, peeled, and chopped
- 2 c. almond milk, unsweetened
- 6-8 large ice cubes
- 1 T. chia seeds
How to make the smoothie
Add the bananas, berries, beets and almond milk to a blender with ice cubes and blend. Make sure everything is smooth and creamy, usually around 2 minutes. If the mixture is too thick, add a little water to thin it.
Split between four glasses and top with some chia seeds or a sprig of fresh mint then enjoy

Recipe tips
You can use raw or roasted beets in this recipe but generally, roasted beet will give a smoother texture to the drink. They are easy enough to prepare ahead if you want this to be a morning smoothie too – wash and wrap the beet in aluminium foil and put in the oven for about an hour. Leave to cool and store in the fridge until making the drink.
While we are using strawberries and raspberries in this recipe, there’s nothing to stop you swapping these with other berries. The colour of the drink might be a little different, but you can change the flavour and also focus on your favourites – or what you have lying around the house!
