What fruits to add to summer smoothies

There’s no rule that says because it is summer, you can only eat certain things.  But there are some fruits that just seem to say ‘summer’ more than others.  Plus, if you are interested in seasonal eating, then it is good to see what is in season and make your smoothie recipes accordingly.  Then you can have healthy summer smoothies that use in-season ingredients.

Watermelon

Watermelon is definitely a summer smoothie recipe favourite because they have a lovely taste and also increases the liquid content of the drink naturally to make it a proper smoothie.  Watermelon is also good for more than just increasing water content – it contains nutrients such as lycopene – which helps arteries stay elastic rather than hardening.  It also contains citrulline, which dilates blood vessels and helps them work properly.

Kiwi

Kiwi gets labeled a ‘superfood’ and for good reason.  It has loads of the nutrients we need but also a lot of antioxidants that fight off those evil free radicals that damage our bodies.  It also contains a good amount of dietary fibre and this helps with processing other foods.  An added benefit is being a source of folate and B vitamins.

Acai berries

You tend to find acai berries in powdered form, and that makes them ideal for an easy fruit smoothie recipe – you give it extra punch without the extra content.  They also have those handy antioxidants and lots of vitamins as well as being low in sugar – so no unhealthy sugar rush.

Avocado

I know avocado might not seem like a smoothie ingredient (and I’m never entirely sure it is a fruit or what), but that soft, creamy texture blends up well, and they contain 15 different vitamins and minerals.  Plus, the good fats and oils in the avocado help to keep soft tissues flexible.

Best summer smoothie recipes

So that’s a few of the classic summer smoothie ingredients to help you choose your own best smoothie recipe.  But let’s not stop there – how about some recipes with other summer favourites to help out?

Blueberry smoothie

Everyone raves about blueberries and they are right – plus they turn the drink this cool shade of purple, so what’s not to love?  Blueberries are a superfood, naturally sweet, and blend well into a drink.

  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 cup blueberries (frozen or fresh)
  • 1 tbsp natural almond butter
  • Optional – 2 scoops of vanilla protein powder

Raspberry coconut smoothie

This one is a great idea for a breakfast smoothie recipe as you can make it in a batch that serves 3-4 people, and all share it.  Raspberry is full of antioxidants, while bananas provide both potassium and carbs.  Plus, the chia seeds add a little protein to the drink to give you some energy.

Here’s that watermelon mentioned earlier with blueberries – this makes around 2 good servings.

  • 1 cup watermelon, cut into cubes

Tropical summer smoothies

There are some fruits that just should be ‘tropical and sunshine’ no matter what you do with them.  But when you make smoothies with them, you get all that goodness as well as that fun, tropical feel to your drink.

Sun love smoothie

This smoothie has a good boost of carbs and natural sugar to give you a boost during the day, plus a lovely tropical taste.

  • 1 cup frozen berries
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 peeled and separated orange
  • 4oz. Greek yoghurt

Hawaiian Pina Colada Smoothie

I mentioned earlier that some smoothies were a bit like drinking a cocktail but without alcohol, and this one is a perfect example.  The yoghurt provides potassium and probiotics, while there are loads of nutrients and vitamins in the fruit.

  • 1 frozen banana
  • ¾ cup fresh pineapple (cubes)
  • ½ cup shredded coconut
  • 1/3 cup plain Greek yoghurt
  • ¼ tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup ice chunks

Mango Kiwi Smoothie

Mango is another really tropical flavour paired with the goodness of kiwi and you have a top smoothie recipe.  There are also hemp seeds that help with protein and between them, the fruit brings vitamins A, C, and K to the mix.

  • 1.25 cups frozen mango chunks
  • 1.5 tbsp hemp seeds
  • 1 frozen kiwi, peeled and cut into chunks
  • ½ cup apple juice
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 tbsp fresh lime juice
